Misty Robotics
About one in six (17%) children aged 3–17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability in 2020 (CDC, 2020). With developmental disabilities, it can be hard for a child to interact with adults and other peers. However, Misty is here to aid therapists, parents, and children with a range of interactive activities. A common developmental disability, that regularly requires therapy, is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with one in 54 children diagnosed (CDC, 2020). Multiple theories exist; however, music is quickly becoming a popular tool. One advantage of using music as a tool is that it simulates both hemispheres of the brain supporting cognitive activity by building self-awareness while improving relationship skills with others (AMTA, 2012).
Children with developmental disabilities tend to have reluctance when speaking with guardians, adults, and other children. With the inability to interact well with therapists, Misty is here to be a friendly medium, as she would be viewed as a friend rather than an authority figure.
